Working History October 2011: CELTA TRAINING
As part of the training for my CELTA qualification, I have taught 8 hours of English classes to a mixture of pre-intermediate and upper-intermediate level students. Furthermore, I have observed 31 hours of English teaching by other teachers.

* Summer 2008: Librarian and Tour Guide
• Location: Ballitore Library and Quaker Museum, County Kildare, Ireland.
• Responsibility: I lectured visiting tourists from all around the world (adults and children) about the history of Ballitore Quaker community and the library house via guided tours.
Relevant Teaching Skill: This job trained me in the skill of adapting and monitoring my English usage when teaching learners with very little spoken English.
• Responsibility: I instructed visitors on effective usage of the library computers; I checked in/checked out books to the public using the advanced library computer programme; my tenure saw a substantial increase in library membership; I issued and collected fines for late returns; I shelved/sorted books; I assisted in managing book stocks; I dealt with customer enquiries; I accounted for and stored money received from book sales and promoted the library through delivery of information leaflets to be displayed in surrounding businesses; I was responsible for the opening and closing of the library and museum in the mornings and evenings.
Relevant Teaching Skill: I have significant people skills and ability to deal with learners face-to-face. I am experienced in dealing with learner enquiries and requests. I am also skilled in managing the administrative functions and paperwork involved in successfully running an educational institution.
• Responsibility: I frequently dealt with children, helping them to locate appropriate books, encouraging them to use the library more, and generally trying to make reading and learning as enjoyable as possible for them.

* 2010-2011: Volunteer Student Counsellor
• Location: Trinity College Dublin
• Responsibilities: I trained as a ‘Peer Mentor’ at my university. This position involved helping to introduce incoming first year students to college-life, aiding them with any problems of integration they might have had and organizing fun events, such as cinema-nights, to make sure they were settling in ok. I also undertook further training as a ‘Peer Supporter’: I am trained in talking with and assisting troubled students with any college-related/personal/social/family difficulties they might be having, by meeting with them on a one-to-one basis.
• Relevant Teaching Skill: I am very conscious of the pressures students may feel when studying a subject, and how some students may feel overwhelmed and helpless in the face of a difficult learning challenge like practicing a new language. I am able to identify when certain students feel this way, and I can encourage them to persist in their learning and to triumph over their reservations and fears.

* Summer 2009: Volunteer Archaeologist
• Location: Archaeological excavation, Lattara, Montpellier, France.
• Responsibilities: While on site, I lived and socialised with an international community of fellow volunteers, ranging from countries as diverse as France, Belgium, Spain, Germany, Algeria, Canada and America. I excavated and catalogued ancient remains, drew ground plans, used measuring equipment, set tables and served for dinners and lunches.
• Relevant Teaching Skill: I am able to befriend and work as a team player alongside co-workers from around the world; I am able to immerse myself in a foreign country and culture yet still work effectively for my employer.

* 2010-2011: University Library Assistant
• Location: Trinity College Dublin, Ireland.
• Responsibilities: I shelved and sorted the book collections in the University library. I helped students, and other adult-learners visiting the library, with any enquiries they had. I was closely involved in stock-keeping and stock-management.
• Relevant Teaching Skill: I am very familiar with the needs of students in terms of working time, space, and materials- I am adept at catering to these learning needs in order to facilitate student education in as efficient a manner as possible.

* 2007-2008: Shop Assistant
• Location: ‘Costcutters’ Newsagent, Calverstown, County Kildare, Ireland.
• Responsibilities: I served customers from the till and dealt with any enquiries they had. I shelved products, assisted in stock management, cleaned the shop, prepared and served food from the deli, assisted in opening and closing the shop. I had continuous dealings with young children: I had to help them find particular sweets/chocolate etc. and make small-chat with them.
• Relevant Teaching Skill: This job trained me in dealing with the public and with customers. I am very aware that public image is everything for a business, especially an English school. I am skilled at presenting myself in a professional, friendly manner, thereby ensuring that customers return again and again.
