Personal Introduction
Dear Search Committee:
This letter is presented for your consideration of my eligibility for the position of English Conversation Instructor with with your university.
I have a passion for helping adult learners improve their English language skills. I have had the privilege of teaching at the university level in both the People’s Republic of China and in Thailand. In China, my curriculum was entirely left up to me and I relied on task-based and storytelling methods in the classroom. My curriculum and schedule was dictated to me with very little room for change at Chiang Mai University in Thailand, which was mostly based on rote memorization and workbook activities. At Payap University, broad goals were set for the students and I was given free rein on how to accomplish those goals. Consequently, I have experience in a range of classroom situations: from lessons completely controlled by a department, to classrooms where I both set the goals for the semester and the steps by which to complete those goals. I have also taught TEOFL and SAT preparation courses for junior and senior high school students who are planning to study in the US or other English speaking countries for their university educations.
I understand the specific frustrations of not being able to express yourself adequately in a second language from my experiences living in Thailand and China. I believe in the importance of cross-cultural learning and the value of being able to communicate effectively. This leads me to pursue excellence in meeting the collective learning needs of the classes I teach in innovative and practical ways. My education in linguistics has provided me with an understanding of the root issues involved with language learning and effective communication and provide me with a unique ability to design valid classroom activities to meet those needs.
I hope to be able to bring my linguistic training and teaching experience alongside your team of instructors to help the students at your university achieve their English language goals in order that they may be effective and successful in their chosen fields of study. I believe that my education and experience has provided me with the specific resources your university needs in order to accomplish its goals.
Thank you for your time and consideration, and please contact me for any additional details on my teaching experience or references.
