Duties and Placement

JOB DESCRIPTION

Successful applicants will be required to conduct English conversation classes for Korean elementary and secondary school students in Seoul as part of the Korean government’s aim to promote and strengthen English language education. A candidate should have strong sense of creativity, motivation, and enjoy working with young children as part of an academic team. Successful applicants are expected to focus on the development of oral communication skills using interactive teaching methods.

 

DUTIES AND PLACEMENT

A: Duties

The duties of the Native Speaker English Teacher (hereinafter “NSET”) are carried out under the guidance of the supervisor designated by Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education (hereinafter “SMOE”).

The responsibilities and duties include but are not limited to:

  • Conducting English classes in cooperation with Korean homeroom or English language teachers.
  • Preparing teaching materials and activities for English language education.
  • Assisting with the development of teaching materials related to English language education.
  • Assisting with activities related to English language education and other extracurricular activities. (Judging English speech contest, voice recording for English listening comprehension tests, conducting English conversational classes in the English camp, etc.)

B: Place of Work

The SMOE will decide placements accordingly. Participants will work at elementary and middle schools within Seoul, but some may be designated to work at other educational facilities within the SMOE system.

Rejection of placement may result in disqualification from the program.

Eligibility

A. Basic Requirement

Applicants must:

  • Hold a minimum of Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university.
  • Be a citizen from a country where the only official language is English. Canadian citizens from the Quebec Province where English is a co-official language must have been taught in English-language schools from junior high school forth to the university level.

    *Ethnic Korean applicants with foreign citizenships or legal residencies must have been taught in English-language schools from junior high school forth and have lived abroad for minimum of 10 years. (If you are a male citizen of the Republic of Korea under the age of 35, you must have either completed mandatory military service or have received an official waiver.)
     
  • Be fluent and proficient in the English language grammar and structure and be able to communicate fluently with clear and distinct pronunciation and manner.
  • Be mentally and physically capable of performing the specified responsibilities and duties. Must also have the ability and willingness to adapt to Korean culture and living.
  • Meet the criteria of eligibility for E2 (work) visa set forth by the Korean Immigration Authority.

B. Remuneration

Level H: 1.8 million won per month

  • A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in one of major English-speaking countries with the instructions taught in English.

Level G: 2.0 million won per month

Must have one of the following qualifications:

  • A valid teacher certification for either elementary or secondary level schools.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Education.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in English, English Education, English Literature, or Linguistics.
  • A TESOL/TEFL or an English Teaching Certificate comprised of a minimum of 100 course hours.
  • A Master's degree.
  • A Bachelor's degree with at least ONE (1) full year of English teaching experience at accredited institutions.

Level F: 2.2 million won per month

Must have one of the following qualifications:

  • In addition to one of the requirements for Level G, ONE (1) full year of English teaching experience at accredited institutions including at the SMOE.
  • A teacher certification with specialization in English Education.
  • A Master’s degree in Education.

Level E: 2.3 million won per month

Must have one of the following qualifications:

  • Meet the Level G qualification with at least TWO (2) full years of English teaching experience at accredited institutions.
  • Employed as Level F at the SMOE for ONE (1) full year.
  • A Master's degree in TESOL/TEFL or in English Education.

Level D: 2.4 million won per month

Employed as Level E at the SMOE for ONE (1) full year.

  • At least ONE (1) full year of English teaching experience at accredited institutions with Master's degree in TESOL/TEFL or in English education.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in English education with at least THREE (3) full years of English teaching experience at accredited institutions.
  • A teacher certification with specialization in English education with at least TWO (2) full years of English teaching experience at accredited institutions.

Level C: 2.5 million won per month

  • At least TWO (2) full years of English teaching experience at accredited institutions with Master's degree in TESOL/TEFL or in English education.
  • A teacher certification with specialization in English education with at least THREE (3) full years of English teaching experience at accredited institutions.
  • Employed as Level D at the SMOE for TWO (2) full years.

Level B: 2.6 million won per month

  • At least THREE (3) full years of English teaching experience at accredited institutions with Master's degree in TESOL/TEFL or in English education.
  • At least THREE (3) full years of English teaching experience as a present public or private school teacher with a recommendation by the superintendent or the school principal.
  • Employed as Level D at the SMOE for THREE (3) full years.

Level A: 2.7 million won per month

  • At least FOUR (4) full years of English teaching experience at accredited institutions with Master's degree in TESOL/TEFL or in English education.
  • At least FOUR (4) full years of English teaching experience as a present public or private school teacher with a recommendation by the superintendent or the school principal.

C. Contract term and other conditions

The term of the contract is for 52 weeks (one year).

The NSET shall work 8 hours per day, 5 calendar days per week excluding Saturdays, Sundays and national holidays (approx. 14 days) of the Republic of Korea. The work hours of NSET may follow the normal work schedule of Korean teachers.

Actual class instruction hours of NSET shall not exceed 22 hours per week. (If exceeded, NSET will be entitled a supplementary class instruction pay). The person in charge of the work place may require NSET to work overtime in addition to normal workdays and work hours. In this case, overtime pay will be provided.

If NSET should desire to resign and thereby terminate the contract, he/she must give SMOE a one-month prior written notice of resignation and will not be able to have or seek employment in other institutes. (Letter of release will not be provided.)

Benefits

A. Accommodation

A single leased house (apartment or studio-type room) as well as some basic household items will be provided by the SMOE.

Any and all fees, charges, costs, taxes, expenses, etc. incurred in using the apartment shall be borne by NSET. NSET shall pay a one-time only security deposit of 500,000 Korean Won. (The security deposit will be returned to the NSET at the end of the contract less the last month’s utilities).

B. Airfare

The airfare for Employee's flight to Korea shall be provided by SMOE based on an economy class airfare of the most direct flight available from NSET’s permanent overseas residence to Incheon Airport. In case of a contract renewal, as an added benefit, a roundtrip flight ticket will be provided from Incheon Airport to either NSET’s home country or to the destination of NSET’s choice. With the latter option, the total price of the flight must be equal to or less than the price of airfare to NSET’s home country.

Employee resigning within the first 6 months of the current contract is responsible for reimbursing the airfare.

C. Vacation and Paid Leaves

(1) Paid leaves:

A total of 21 working days will be provided as official vacation days with agreement from SMOE. Employees working in a school system shall take the leave during the summer and winter recess.

If the requested vacation period interferes with work operations like students English Camp, vacation dates can be alternated. A request for a leave should be submitted and approved by SMOE at least fifteen (15) days in advance.

(2) Special Leave:

Employee may take a special leave of absence for a number of days (inclusive of national holidays, Saturday and Sunday) as set forth below for each of the following events;

  • Seven (7) calendar days for Employee's marriage.
  • Seven (7) calendar days for the death of Employee's parent or spouse; three (3) calendar days for the death of Employee's child.
  • In case of a female Employee, up to ninety (90) calendar days for a maternity leave.

※ Special leaves specified in items 1 and 2 are available with pay. However, maternity leave shall be available with pay for only the first sixty days.

(3) Sick leave:

Fifteen (15) calendar days per contract

(If the one-time sick leave duration lasts for more than 7 days, a medical report will be required, if for more than 15 days, it will be considered as non-paid leave).

D. Tax Exemption

All NSETs, except Canadians, will be exempted from paying Korean income tax for the first two years of employment. In order to be tax exempted, the following list of documents will be required to be submitted to the supervisor in charge of the program within the first month of employment.

  • an application form (provided by your supervisor)
  • a copy of Residence Certificate (issued by the relevant authority - Revenue Office of your resident country)

If you have already worked more than two years in Korea, you will not be eligible to be tax-exempted.

Canadian instructors will be responsible for approximately 2-4% of their income as Korean income tax depending on the level of employment, since there is no tax treaty between Canada and Korea.

E. Other Benefits

(1) A settlement allowance of 300,000 Korean won will be provided for the first year. In case of the termination of contract within six (6) months, regardless of course or ground therefore, NSET shall immediately pay back SMOE the fore mentioned allowance.

(2) SMOE will provide NSET with half of the medical insurance pursuant to the National Medical Insurance Act of Korea. In the event NSET has his/her family living with him or her in Korea, SMOE will also provide and pay for medical insurance premium for the NSET’s family.

(3) The SMOE will provide employee with half of the national pension plan deduction (approximately 4.5% of salary) pursuant to the National Pension Corporation Act of Korea. American or Canadian NSETs are eligible for a pension distribution refund if he/she submits the required documents to the Korean National Pension Corporation when he/she leaves Korea after the completion of his/her contract.

(4) Return airfare will be provided upon completing the contract. Round trip airfare for visiting home country will be provided for NSETs who renew their contract.

(5) NSET will be entitled to thirty (30) calendar days’ average wage as a severance pay upon the completion of the one-year contract.
